Chen Wenling’s solo exhibition “Emergency Escape” at Joy Art Gallery in 798 is quite different from the artist’s earlier works. In this large installation, a golden bull (the symbol for Wall Street) is ramming its head into a horned Madoff.

“放屁“ (fang pi) in Chinese literally means to fart but in slang it means to bluff or lie. This piece does not need much explaining and is quite entertaining. I have always appreciated Chen Wenling’s humor.

Chen Wenling has moved on from his “God of Materialism” series which was shown last year at the Asia Art Center. In my opinion, the quest for the dollar and the subsequent materialism of the Chinese is best represented in these large obese piggies.
